After two false celebrations, Sudeep finally has his 50th film in progress. Darshan will miss milestone now as some of his films have uncredited roles
At the launch of his latest film, Bachchan, Sudeep had a pleasant surprise when director Shashank said he grew up watching the actor’s films. Sudeep, who made his debut in legendary producer Abbai Naidu's last film Tayavva (released in 1997) is already 16 years old in the film industry. It would have been a much earlier debut, but for the abandonment of two other films midway. With quite a few guest roles and films in other languages, the actor-director has reached the half-century milestone. In July, the Telugu-Tamil Eega/Naan Ee will be the 47th and 48th films of Sudeep. Following that will be Varadanayaka, which is also weeks away from release. That makes Bachchan, his ‘real’ 50th film.
For Sudeep’s closest peer Darshan, who is also close to 50 films, there is an unfortunate hurdle. Chingari was his 40th film as lead actor. However, if his bit roles in earlier films are considered, Bul Bul will be his 50th film. Darshan said that these early films amount to six or seven. These include, Mahabharata, Devara Maga and even a Tamil film, starring Vijayakanth. Both Bachchan and Bul Bul are expected to commence shooting next month.
Sudeep said, “I am not a person who will celebrate these numbers. When different people gave different numbers, I was not bothered. The success of a film gives me better kick. But since entertainment from various sources has also made films like T20 cricket rather than Test cricket, we have to raise our bats for 50 runs. It has been quite a journey and still looks very short. But only at the end of the journey will you realise how long you have waited or how far you have travelled.”
Like Sudeep, Darshan is not concerned about numbers. When asked about his earlier bit roles, he said that it numbered ‘six or seven’. He said that in his struggling years, he wanted work and would readily accept whatever came his way.
Bachchan has to be marked as Sudeep's 'real 50th' because earlier some films went to town marketing as his 50th film. His Hindi film, Raan (2010) and Kempe Gowda (2011) were also claimed to be his 50th. However, they turned out to be false celebrations. Sudeep has so far made eight guest appearances in his career (Prathyarta, Thuntata, Gunna, Jackpot, C/o Footpath, Meghave Meghave, Aithalakadi and Police Story 3). There are five Hindi films (Phoonk, Phoonk 2, Rann, Rakta Charitra, Rakta Charitra 2, two Telugu films (Rakta Charitra 1 and 2), one Tamil (Raththa Sarithiram). One more Telugu and Tamil films (Eega/Naan Ee) will release in July).
The rest of his films are full-fledge roles in Kannada and he has directed five of these. Darshan's first film as lead actor was Majestic in 2001. His 10th film was Darshan, and 25th Bhupati. Kranti Veera Sangolli Rayanna and Viraat are his two films readying for release this year.
