Bangalore Metro first test run successful
Monday, January 24, 2011

BANGALORE: The eagerly-awaited Namma Metro train, which is scheduled for commercial operations in March, completed its first full technical test run between Byappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road, a distance of 6.7 km, successfully here on Sunday.

The train, comprising two driver-motor coaches and one metro car pulled out of the Byappanahalli Depot around 4 p.m., after clearing minor hitches within the depot, and reached its destination on Mahatma Gandhi Road around 7 p.m. with stops at all the six stations en-route.

The train proceeded at a restricted speed of around 25 km per hour and all the parameters were thoroughly checked and rectified, if necessary, during the stops at the stations. The train was filled with not only Metro officials but also Metro personnel to ensure sufficient load. The test run was conducted on the “down track” while the “up track” is yet to be energised.

The train's return journey to Byappanahalli station was also on the “down track”.

“The train took just 15 minutes in the return journey to reach Byappanahalli station from Mahatma Gandhi Road”, a Metro spokesperson said.

Enthusiasm

Even though the test run was conducted unannounced, people who learnt about the run through electronic media, gathered on the terraces of their buildings all along the elevated corridor.

As the train passed through C.M.H. Road, Swami Vivekananda Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road, onlookers waved their hands in enthusiasm. Shriram K., who was visiting Mahatma Gandhi Road, said that he was thrilled by the trial run and hoped that the project will be completed early to offer larger benefits to the general public.

In March

Metro officials said that Sunday's technical test run was the first full run of Namma Metro on Reach 1 of Phase 1, i.e., between Byappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road, which is expected to be thrown open for the public in March.

Though Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) had earlier decided to conduct the technical run from morning till evening on Saturday and Sunday, the run on Saturday had to be shelved following the State bandh organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Union Urban Development Minister Kamalnath were scheduled to launch the trial run of Namma Metro on Monday. Due to the swift political developments since Friday evening, Mr. Yeddyurappa on Saturday announced that the official launching has been postponed and indicated that it may be held on January 28. However, Bangalore Metro will continue with the technical run, he added.

Parameters

Sunday's full test run comes after the first test run between Byappanahalli and C.M.H. Road stations conducted last month.

Metro spokesperson said that during the test run on Sunday, officials concerned checked various parameters involving the operation of the train. Tracks, power lines, power supply, third rail and the train set were thoroughly checked during the run, he said.

He said the test run on the “up track” will be conducted during this week using the same methodology adopted on Sunday. After the track and the elements are found fit, the full-scale oscillation trial runs will be conducted regularly. This will eventually lead to the trial run for safety certification to be obtained by the Commissioner for Railway Safety, the spokesperson said.
